PLAYFUL ACORN · FOR GROWN-UPS

Five minutes, side by side.

You don’t need to be a reading teacher. A familiar voice, a little patience, and a short round together are a lovely place to start.

  1. Choose one skill. Start with your teacher’s suggestion, or let your child pick a game.
  2. Listen together. Turn on the sound. Show one example, then give your child time to try.
  3. Keep it gentle. Two answer choices is the default. Nothing is timed, and a wrong answer is an invitation to listen again.
  4. Finish on a good moment. Each round has three questions. Stop earlier if your child is tired or frustrated.

Learning to play without reading

Tap the large play symbol. Pip names and highlights the pictures, demonstrates a match, then points to a practice answer for your child to tap. This example is not scored. Each round has three turns. Correct answers move on automatically after Pip finishes speaking. The pointing-hand button replays the example without losing round progress.

Picture names are read aloud in rhyming rounds. If your child understands the tapping but the skill is still new, practice together and follow your teacher’s suggestions.

Make practice fit your child

Open “Grown-up settings” in any game. Choose two or three answers. In the letter games, choose letter shapes and the letters you want to practice. Letter Post supports A–Z. Sound Garden starts with six letters: m, s, f, n, v and z.

A note about sound

Pip’s American English narration is prepared in advance with an AI voice. Every device plays the same audio files at the same pace. Use “Hear Pip’s voice” in settings to check your sound. If an audio file cannot play, a grown-up can use the read-aloud prompt. No microphone or voice recording is used. Sound Garden says familiar whole words, such as “moon”, and asks for the letter matching the first sound. It does not test every possible sound a letter can make.

Our first-family play check

After a round, ask: “Was there a picture you didn’t know? Was anything hard to tap? Which game would you like to play again?”

Notice whether your child can begin after one example, uses the replay button, and enjoys finishing. Try one new example away from the screen to see what carries over.

Practice, not a scorecard

The end-of-round recap counts first-try matches and words that needed another listen. It is not a diagnosis, a grade, or a reading assessment. Matching a choice and saying an answer independently are different skills. Follow your child’s teacher’s guidance when deciding what to practice next.
