A letter has a name. It represents a sound.
Knowing that a letter is called M and hearing the first sound in “moon” are related, but they are not the same task.
Letter names: choose Letter Post
In Letter Post, your child hears a letter name and chooses its written shape. Start with a few familiar letters and use settings to choose uppercase, lowercase or a mix. Later, point to a letter away from the screen and invite your child to name it without answer choices.
Play Letter Post →Sounds and letters: choose Sound Garden
Sound Garden says a familiar word, such as “sun”. Your child listens to its first sound and chooses s. The six starter words are moon, sun, fish, nest, van and zebra. The game uses whole-word pronunciation rather than an isolated sound recording.
Model the start of the word when your child needs help. For m, you can hold “mmm” gently; avoid adding an extra “uh”. Follow the examples your child’s teacher uses, especially when you move to new sounds.

A letter can represent different sounds in different words. This first version offers one initial-sound example for each of six consonants; it does not cover the alphabet’s full range of spellings and sounds. Practice with different words together before assuming the skill has carried over.
